What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a job with training so you can earn while you learn and gain qualifications. You can work alongside experienced people who are willing to pass on their skills and knowledge. You must be 16 or over to start an apprenticeship.
Apprenticeship training can take from one to four years to complete, depending on the level:
- intermediate apprenticeship (level 2)
- advanced apprenticeship (level 3)
- higher apprenticeship (level 4 and above)
- degree apprenticeship (levels 5 to 7).
Pay
Apprentices are entitled to the National Minimum Wage (NMW).

Some employers may not already have apprenticeship placements, but may be willing to set one up for you.
What is a traineeship?
A traineeship is a course with work experience that helps prepare for an apprenticeship or job. It can last up to six months and is available to 16 to 24 year olds qualified below level 3, eligible to work in England and who are unemployed or have little or no work experience. Help with English and maths is offered if needed. There is no payment, but expenses may be given for things like travel and meals.
